Week 13 Devlog


This week, the team worked on polishing the game's core functions and further developing a core style for the 2D art for the main menu, cover art, and UI. For the 2D art, we wanted it to follow the style guide of our current enemy and player character color scheme, so we decided to focus on grayscale images that would convey our art style. Currently, we are still looking to flesh out some of the 2D art to get a final look. 

We started implementing other polishing passes for our game such as particle effects for wisps. We plan to continue adding more effects for the movements and attacks of the main character. We are also looking to add particle effects to enemy attacks such as the King Slime to sell the power of certain actions. Another polishing element we have added to the game so far is the occlusion masking of the camera. Currently, when rotating the camera or backing against a wall the camera can see through the object so the player character will always remain visible. 

Modular rooms have also been upgraded. The team has worked to get the inclusion of unique rooms that have different event-based actions. This means that now rooms will not always be guaranteed, this will provide a more "rogue-like" experience for the player allowing for more replayability of the game as new rooms will be spawned every playthrough. We are looking to randomize other elements of spawn rooms in the future, such as environmental elements like foliage and objects. We also plan to create a unique random lighting environment for certain rooms. 

On a final note, we have pushed out our first alpha build! If you want to test out the game feel free to give it a try, we plan to get a new build uploaded next week

  • 2D Art: 6.5 hours
    • Main Menu,  Text UI Effects, and Cover Art.
  • Effects and Polishing: 4 hours 
    • Particle Effects, Occlusion Masking, and Bug Fixing
  • Room Generation:  2 hours
    • Event-Based Rooms, and Procedural Generation.
